Seamless Summer Travel

Whether you’re headed to the beach, the mountains, or to see the grandparents, traveling while following a ketogenic diet can be exhausting before the trip even starts. Preparation is everything, but how does one prepare?

Dawn Martenz, author of The Keto Cookbook and The Modified Keto Cookbook, keeps a travel kit ready to go.  Here are the go to items in Dawn’s keto travel kit (pictured below).

In a large plastic tub with a tight fitting lid pack the following:


Carb Sources:

  • Squeezable Natural Applesauce or fruit puree packets
  • Individual serving size cans of vegetables like green beans

Protein source:

  • Packets or small cans of tuna or chicken

Fat sources:

  • Individual mayonnaise packets (grab these for free when eating out)
  • Packaged nuts, seeds, or nut butter packets
  • mini bottle or packets of olive oil (check your local convenience store or World Market for smaller sizes)
  • High fat salad dressing packets
  • Coconut oil packets
  • Packets of olives

Flavorings and Condiments:

  • Mustard packets (grab these when eating out)
  • Truvia packets, liquid stevia drops, or sweetener of choice
  • Salt & pepper packets


  • Mini cutting board
  • Mini cookie cutters or crinkle cutter to cut items into fun shapes
  • Small light weight bowl
  • Travel gram scale
  • Mini spatula
  • Syringes – 10 ml
  • Travel can opener
  • Plastic utensils
  • Snack or sandwich sized zippered plastic bags
  • Small closure clips
  • Food safe wipes to clean hands and surfaces
